1986: Demolition of Commer Factory, Luton
Site: Commer Factory, Biscot Road Luton
C Jackson & Sons demolished the 10 acre factory which first opened in 1906 to make way for a new housing project.
This site was the location of our first NFDC Site Audit
It was also the Companies first use of explosives. We brought the 30m high main chimney stack down by controlled explosion.
Demolition equipment used included crawler cranes with drop balls; excavators fitted with early cutting shears and tracked loaders.
Our use of mobile concrete crushers to process the 20,000 tonnes of concrete arisings on site represented pioneering recycling on a major scale.
