1991 - Demolition of The Granada Cinema, St Peters Street, Bedford
Site: Granada Cinema, St Peters Street, Bedford
Construction of the Granada gave work to 190 local men and was built at a cost of £48,750 by Bovis Ltd
The cinema first opened its doors on 15th December 1934. From its enthusiastic launch to its closure in 1990 the Granada was not only a cinema screen but a venue for stage acts and concerts.
This was a high profile demolition project for us in Bedford Town Centre. Bordered by St Peters Street at the front and abutted each side by occupied buildings, the Granada proved to be a tough and challenging building to demolish.
The HSE had recently granted C Jackson & Sons a license to remove asbestos.
